"ELVIS PEOPLE," A NEW PLAY, TO PREMIER IN NEW YORK CITY
Funny and touching show will begin performances June 6, 2007

NEW YORK (May 25, 2007) — On the eve of the 30th anniversary of Elvis Presley's untimely death, "Elvis People" (www.elvispeople.com), a new play, examines "The King's" impact on American culture through the eyes of the people he affected throughout and beyond his life.

Playwright Doug Grissom, an Associate Professor and Head of Playwriting at the University of Virginia, was inspired to write "Elvis People" after reading a Presley biography and noticing how all-encompassing his influence was. "Everywhere I turned, someone had an Elvis story," Grissom said. "I realized this was bigger than Elvis himself: it touched on our culture of celebrity, our proclivity for deification and the nature of obsession."

With the iconic mythology of Presley's life as the backdrop, "Elvis People" is a funny and touching journey through the decades that delivers a 360 degree look at a group of disparate people profoundly influenced by the cultural icon known as Elvis Presley.

Robert Rush, Executive Producer of "Elvis People," has been cultivating "Elvis People" since he saw a staged reading of Grissom's work in Gainesville, Florida's Hippodrome State Theatre more than three years ago.

"The audience was veering between laughter and tears the entire night," Rush said. "So much so I knew right then and there that I had to bring ‘Elvis People' to New York City."

"Elvis People," a new play by Doug Grissom, directed by Henry Wishcamper begins performances June 6, 2007 at New World Stages Stage 1 (340 West 50th Street, between Eighth and Ninth Avenues). Opening night is June 21, 2007.
